Rohit sharma makes captaincy promise to BCCI, report says he plans to quit after tournament

Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): India’s Test and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, recently participated in a review meeting with the top officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir was also part of the discussion, which focused on the team's recent underwhelming performances, including the 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia and the 0-3 home defeat against New Zealand. The meeting aimed to evaluate the situation and outline future plans for the team.
Despite growing concerns about his long-term leadership, particularly following his batting struggles, Rohit expressed his desire to continue as captain for a few more months. His decision to bench himself during the final match of the Border-Gavaskar series in Sydney, where India suffered another defeat, had further fueled doubts about his captaincy.
During the meeting, Rohit suggested that the BCCI should begin searching for his successor but made it clear that he wanted to lead the team through the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. After the tournament, the players will join their respective Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, followed by India’s five-match Test series against England. It remains uncertain whether Rohit will continue to captain the team for that series, and the BCCI is expected to make a decision on India’s long-term leadership during this phase.
Jasprit Bumrah’s name has emerged as a possible successor to Rohit, though concerns over his fitness persist. Bumrah, who led the Indian team during the 2021 tour of Australia, has been struggling with injury issues. He suffered a back injury during the final Test in Sydney and was unable to bowl in the second innings. This has led to questions about his ability to manage the demanding role of captain, especially during a lengthy five-match Test series. As the leadership debate continues, Rohit’s tenure as captain could extend into 2025, depending on the outcomes of upcoming tournaments and series. The BCCI is expected to continue monitoring the situation as it looks to solidify both its leadership and overall team performance moving forward.
