Lyon(The Uttam Hindu): Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, now playing for Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League, responded to Andre Onana’s recent comments where the Manchester United goalkeeper claimed his team was superior to Lyon and stated they should focus on themselves rather than their upcoming opponents. Matic, who made 189 appearances for United during his five years at Old Trafford, pointed out that Onana is "statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s modern history" and that he should prove his worth on the pitch before making such bold statements.

He said, "To make such a claim, you need to have some backing. I respect everyone, but to say that, you need to be prepared for the response. If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin Van der Sar said that, I would question myself. But if you're statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United's history, you need to show more on the field before speaking. We’ll see." Matic’s comments come amid a difficult season for Manchester United, who are on track to finish with their lowest-ever league position, surpassing last year's low of eighth place. Currently, United sits in 13th place after winning just 10 of their 31 games, with 41 goals conceded and 37 scored, leading to a minus-four goal difference.

With the team having been eliminated from the FA Cup and struggling in the league, the Europa League now represents their best chance to secure a spot in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. A win in the competition is crucial for their European hopes, and they’ll look to make the most of their remaining opportunity to salvage their season.
