India's Last Hope Shattered Before Final Matches of Border-Gavaskar Trophy, BCCI Reveals Major Reason

Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami will not be considered for selection in the final two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a fitness update on Monday, confirming the decision. When asked about Shami following the Gabba Test, Indian captain Rohit Sharma had mentioned that the information should be provided to the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The BCCI statement revealed that its medical team has been closely monitoring Shami's recovery from an ankle issue. He has fully recovered from the problem with his heel. Since then, he played a Ranji Trophy match in which he bowled 43 overs, and later participated in nine matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, completing his full bowling quota in almost every match. However, during this period, swelling started developing in his left knee, which worsened with continued bowling. As a result, he will not be eligible for selection in the remaining matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Currently under NCA's supervision, Shami is being prepared for longer formats of the game. His participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will depend on the recovery of his knee. Shami has not played international cricket since the 2023 ODI World Cup final in November, and underwent surgery for his ankle injury in February. He was not included in Bengal's squad for the first match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which began on December 21. The BCCI has stated that his involvement in the tournament will depend on the condition of his knee.
