Chandigarh(The Uttam Hindu): The government of Punjab has declared a public holiday on February 26 to commemorate the sacred festival of Mahashivratri. On this day, all schools, colleges, and government offices, including private banks, will remain closed. Mahashivratri, which falls on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha in the Falgun month, holds great significance in Hindu mythology. According to legend, Lord Shiva abandoned his ascetic life and entered into married life with Goddess Parvati on this day. As a result, Mahashivratri is celebrated annually as the wedding festival of Shiva-Gauri.

To mark this auspicious occasion, temples across Punjab will organize Shiva Vivah ceremonies, drawing devotees from all over the state. The festival is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Punjab and its people's deep reverence for their deities. The Punjab government's decision to declare a public holiday on Mahashivratri is a welcome move, allowing citizens to immerse themselves in the festivities and celebrations. As the state comes together to honor Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the spirit of devotion, love, and unity will undoubtedly prevail.
