New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur on Thursday said the state government has launched a skill development programme aimed at providing vocational training to orphaned and destitute children.

Dr Kaur said that this programme has been designed to empower these children with employable skills so that they can become financially self-dependent by the age of 18 years. She informed that under this initiative, 187 children living in various child care institutions will be imparted training in beauty care, hair dressing, multi-technician skills and mobile phone repairing. This programme will help them become self-dependent by giving them practical training in these trades, thereby enhancing their employability and entrepreneurship skills. She informed that to effectively conduct this programme, the government has engaged reputed training institutes and industry experts.

The minister said that to provide further support to these children, the government will facilitate jobs in various industries and service sectors. In collaboration with businesses and institutions, the youth will be given employment opportunities according to their acquired skills. For those who want to start their own business, the government will provide necessary guidance and financial assistance.

Dr Kaur said that the Punjab government has allocated Rs 40 lakh for this initiative, showing its commitment towards the welfare of poor children. The government aims to help them lead a respectable and self-reliant life by providing them with necessary skills and career opportunities.
