New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a bid to enhance the credibility of its immigration system the Canadian government has introduced stricter rules for immigration, effective January 31, 2025. These new regulations, outlined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), grant border and immigration officers the authority to directly cancel temporary resident visas including study and work permits.

Previously, authorities had limited power to cancel issued permits, but under the new rules, officials can now revoke visas and permits in cases of ineligibility, false information, criminal records or significant changes in a person’s circumstances. Additionally study and work permits can be canceled if the permit holder becomes a permanent resident, passes away, or if there are administrative errors in their documents.

The changes, published in the Canada Gazette 99 are part of Canada's ongoing efforts to improve border security and protect the integrity of the immigration system. IRCC emphasized its commitment to refining processes and investing in equipment to ensure security at the border.

These tighter rules are expected to have a significant impact on applicants, particularly Indians, who have long been among the largest groups of international students and workers in Canada. With these changes the Canadian immigration landscape is set to become more stringent, making it even more important for applicants to meet all requirements and maintain eligibility throughout their stay.
