Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for cold wave conditions in seven districts of Punjab: Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Firozpur, Fazilka, Faridkot, and Muktsar. These areas are expected to experience a significant drop in temperatures, with cold waves intensifying. However, sunny afternoons are providing some relief from the chill.
In addition to these districts, cold wave alerts have also been issued for Amritsar, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Moga, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). Chilly winds blowing across Punjab and Chandigarh have been attributed to snowfall in the hills, which has caused a sharp dip in temperatures across the region.
Slight Relief Expected from December 16
According to IMD, the current drop in temperatures is due to icy winds originating from the hills. Recent snowfall in the mountainous regions has led to persistent cold conditions in the plains. However, the temperatures in Punjab and Chandigarh are now stabilizing at normal levels. Relief from extreme cold is expected from December 16, with morning chill likely to decrease.
During this period, there is no forecast for rainfall in Punjab or Chandigarh, indicating that the upcoming week will remain dry.

>Amritsar: A cold wave alert has been issued, with temperatures forecasted between 4°C and 20°C.

>Ludhiana: Clear skies are expected today, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 21°C.
>Patiala: Clear skies are anticipated, with temperatures between 7°C and 22°C.
>Mohali: A cold wave alert is in effect, with temperatures ranging from 6°C to 22°C.
The IMD reports that temperatures across most cities in Punjab and Chandigarh have been significantly affected by the chilly winds and recent snowfall in the hills. Despite the cold wave, dry conditions are expected to persist throughout the region for the next week.
