Amritsar Mayor Election: AAP Snatches Victory From Congress Despite Their Majority

Amritsar(The Uttam Hindu): Jitendra Singh Moti Bhatia from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been elected as the new Mayor of Amritsar. Alongside him, Priyanka Sharma was appointed Senior Deputy Mayor, and Anita became the Deputy Mayor.
In the 85-ward Amritsar, securing 46 votes was required to elect the Mayor. Congress, with 40 councillors, had the highest number of seats but still failed to clinch the Mayor's position. AAP, with 24 councillors, secured the support of 7 independents and 2 BJP councillors, pushing them past Congress in the race. Congress had claimed support from 41 councillors, including one independent, but was still short of the required majority. Following the results, Congress councillors staged a protest, refusing to leave the protest sites inside the medical college and outside the Punjab Congress Medical College.
Moti Bhatia thanked AAP leadership and its MLAs for their backing, vowing to address key issues like improving cleanliness and sewage systems in Amritsar. Congratulating AAP’s victory, MLA Jasbeer Singh from Amritsar West noted that Bhatia’s win, with a majority, signaled strong public support for the party. This election represents a significant success for AAP in Amritsar, with Congress failing to secure the Mayor’s seat despite being the largest party in the council.
