Akal Takht Sahib to Decide on Sukhbir Badal’s Fate, Says Jathedar Raghbir Singh
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh participated in the Sikh Educational Conference today, during which he made a significant statement regarding Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal. He announced that a decision regarding Badal’s punishment would be made soon.
Jathedar Raghbir Singh emphasized the gravity of the matter, stating that the entire Sikh community worldwide is watching closely. He mentioned that a meeting of the Singh Sahiban would be convened shortly to deliberate on the issue. When asked whether the punishment would be religious or political in nature, the Jathedar refrained from giving a direct answer, noting that it would be decided in due course.
The Jathedar also spoke on the role of the Akali Dal in Punjab’s development, declaring that the state’s growth is incomplete without the Akali Dal’s involvement. He stressed that only the Shiromani Akali Dal has consistently worked for the welfare of Punjab, its people, and the Punjabi culture, underlining the importance of strengthening this century-old organization.
Meanwhile, Sukhbir Singh Badal had written a letter to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, which became widely circulated on social media. In the letter, dated November 18, Badal expressed deep remorse for being declared "Tankhaiya" (a term for someone found guilty of religious misconduct by the Akal Takht) and mentioned the significant impact it had on him. He requested to appear before the Akal Takht Sahib with humility and respect, acknowledging the authority of the sacred institution.
Although Sukhbir Badal had resigned from his position as President of the Shiromani Akali Dal on November 18, his resignation has not been accepted yet. A meeting of the Akali Dal Working Committee was convened, where it was stated that the matter was still under review.
