New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Eating fruits is widely regarded as an excellent way to maintain a balanced diet but have you ever wondered if you're consuming too many? Like anything excessive fruit intake can have negative effects on health particularly the liver. When large amounts of fructose from fruits are consistently processed by the liver over time the organ may use the excess fructose to create fat through a process called lipogenesis potentially leading to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) according to nutritionists. To delve deeper into the relationship between fruit consumption and liver health we consulted various experts.

Many people turn to fruit-based diets for quicker weight loss but this is not recommended says according to a researcher hepatologist and clinical lead for the liver and transplant ICU at Gleneagles Hospitals in Parel. While it’s believed that excessive fruit consumption may harm the liver due to the fructose causing fat buildup leading to NAFLD that there are no studies to support this claim. Though no cases have been reported where excessive fruit consumption directly caused liver damage, consuming too much fruit can lead to some uncomfortable side effects. Experts warn that unregulated fruit intake may cause bloating, diarrhea or constipation due to the high fiber and natural sugars, which can have a laxative effect. Additionally, the natural acids and sugars in fruits can contribute to dental issues like tooth decay. For those with diabetes hyperglycemia or pancreatic problems excessive sugar intake may lead to abnormal blood sugar levels. Also highlights that the fructose content in fruits can result in insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes and nutritional deficiencies. Instead of following trendy fruit-based diets it's important to adopt a well-rounded nutritious diet and be aware of the potential side effects of overconsumption.
