Skin Fungal Infections Are More Likely to Occur During Summer

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The intense summer heat and sunlight can cause various skin problems, including heat rashes, fungal infections, and bacterial issues. Those who spend long hours outside, like my neighbor uncle, a sales manager who works 15 hours a day in the sun, are especially prone to these skin issues. My uncle has started experiencing rashes and fungal infections on his skin due to prolonged exposure to the sun, dust, and sweat. Despite using over-the-counter powders, the relief has been minimal.
According to Dr. Seema, the primary cause of skin fungal infections in the summer is sweat and sunlight. Sweat trapped on the skin, especially when it sticks to clothing for long periods, creates an ideal environment for fungi to thrive. Lack of cleanliness during summer also increases the risk of infections. Wearing the same dirty clothes or socks repeatedly, as well as tight clothing that promotes sweating, can worsen the problem.
Experts recommend wearing cotton clothes in summer since cotton absorbs sweat and helps control bacterial growth on the skin. Fabrics like terrycotton and silk can trap sweat, leading to more bacteria and fungal growth. To prevent fungal infections, it's crucial to change clothes daily, particularly underwear and socks, to keep bacteria in check.
In addition, applying sunscreen is another effective way to prevent skin problems. Experts suggest applying sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside. If you're out in the sun for extended periods, be sure to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours on exposed areas like your face, hands, and feet to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and reduce the risk of infections.
Finally, when washing clothes in summer, use a mild detergent and ensure that all soap and detergent residues are thoroughly rinsed out, as leftover soap can cause skin allergies and irritation. Taking these precautions can help prevent skin issues and keep your skin healthy throughout the summer months.
