Remembering Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule: A Pioneer in Women's Education and Social Justice

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): On her death anniversary, we remember the great social reformer and India's first female teacher, Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule. A pioneer in the fight for women’s and marginalized people’s rights, Savitribai courageously challenged the deeply entrenched Brahminical hegemony and fractured their dominance in society.
Her remarkable struggle laid the foundation for social change, as she worked tirelessly to empower women and provide them access to education, breaking the shackles of patriarchy and social injustice. As one of the first women educators in India, Savitribai opened the first school for girls in Pune in 1848, defying the norms of her time and opening doors of education to countless girls who were otherwise denied it.
Her advocacy for the education of the untouchables and women made her a revolutionary figure, as she faced immense opposition from the society of her time. Despite threats, abuse, and hardship, she remained steadfast in her mission to improve the lives of the oppressed.
Savitribai Phule’s legacy continues to inspire generations, not only as a symbol of courage and resilience but also as a torchbearer of social reform, equality, and justice for all. Today, as we reflect on her contributions, we acknowledge her pioneering role in challenging oppressive systems and continue her work towards a more inclusive and egalitarian society.
