New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Patients battling oral cancer no longer need to travel to expensive private hospitals for treatment. A special method, known as the "Commando method," is now being used at Patna's biggest government hospital, PMCH, to treat oral cancer. This new treatment option has been introduced at PMCH where oral cancer surgery was successfully performed for the first time using this innovative technique. The surgery was conducted by a skilled team of medical professionals, including cancer surgeon Dr. Amit Kumar and Assistant Professor of Surgery Dr. Alok Ranjan, under the guidance of Dr. IS Thakur. The Commando method, which is a challenging and complex cancer treatment was applied in this groundbreaking procedure.

The patient, 43-year-old Pradeep Kumar Trivedi from Jangsari village in Nalanda district, had developed mouth cancer due to his long-term habit of consuming gutkha and khaini. His constant use of these products led to the deterioration of his oral health and after visiting multiple hospitals, he was diagnosed with mouth cancer in November 2024. Due to financial constraints, Pradeep was unable to afford expensive treatments and his search for medical help eventually brought him to PMCH. Upon examination, doctors recommended the Commando surgery.

The surgery, which lasted three and a half hours, involved removing the cancerous portion of the patient's mouth, jaw, and throat. The procedure also included reconstructing the jaw using tissue and skin from the chest. The team of doctors, being experienced in performing this high-risk operation, successfully removed the cancer and ensured the patient became cancer-free. Currently, Pradeep is recovering after this life-changing surgery. The Commando method, also known as radical surgery, is performed in three main steps. First, the cancer is removed along with part of the bone. Second any lumps in the neck are excised. Finally, the cavity in the mouth is filled by taking tissue from the chest. This complex procedure is considered one of the most challenging cancer treatments, performed only by skilled and experienced doctors.

For patients like Pradeep, the Commando method provides a viable option for treatment without the need for costly private hospital care. The successful use of this technique at PMCH marks an important milestone in cancer treatment in Patna, offering hope to many others who are battling oral cancer. The tale of this successful surgery highlights the significance of advancements in medical technology and the availability of specialized treatment in government hospitals, ensuring that even those facing financial hardships can access life-saving care.
