Experts say HMPV infection causes mild flu-like symptoms, no cause for alarm
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : Experts have reassured the public that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection which causes flu-like symptoms poses no serious threat. The virus which has been in circulation for over two decades typically leads to symptoms such as cough, fever, blocked nose and mild shortness of breath they said. HMPV, known for causing respiratory illness is especially prevalent during the winter season and has been linked to a seasonal rise in infections. While videos and photos from China have raised concerns about hospitals overwhelmed by rising cases of HMPV experts are quick to point out that this is not unusual for the season. Gautam Menon Dean of Research at Ashoka University, emphasized that the infection is similar to the common cold and that a small fraction (5-10%) of all respiratory infections during flu season can be attributed to HMPV. He reassured the public stating that the rise in cases in China should not be a cause for alarm.
“The symptoms are usually mild, but the very young and elderly may face more severe illness,” Menon explained. He added that unlike Covid-19 HMPV is a well-known virus to which most people have likely been exposed before reducing the potential for widespread panic. Vinod Scaria a noted biologist also weighed in on the issue noting that HMPV infections are common and tend to peak during winter. He stated that it accounts for around 1 in 10 lower respiratory tract infections in the US. Despite this he stressed the importance of developing approved diagnostics for the virus. In conclusion while HMPV cases may rise during this time of year experts emphasized that there is no reason for public concern. They urged people particularly the elderly to take basic precautions like hand washing and wearing masks.
