New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A recent study reveals a global decline in the use of contraceptive pills, with many women ceasing their use after learning about potential side effects through social media. Women involved in the study at Texas Christian University reported that, after seeing the negative effects associated with these pills, they stopped using them. Sarah E. Hill, one of the participants, shared that after using contraceptive pills for twelve years, she felt a sense of freedom when she switched to alternative contraception methods.

The most commonly criticized side effect of contraceptive pills is their impact on mental health, including mood swings and potential fertility issues. Dr. Olga Peter, a researcher involved in the study, noted that when contraceptive pills first hit the American market in 1960, they were widely popular among young women, with over twenty million users in just one year. Women began associating the pill with sexual freedom, although it was not without side effects. Despite improvements over the years, the pill’s consumption is on the decline, largely due to negative social media coverage. According to the study, 52 percent of women now prioritize mental health over preventing unwanted pregnancies.

Early Menopause Becoming More Common

Recent studies have also shown an alarming trend of earlier menopause, with women now experiencing menopause as early as their mid-thirties. A research study conducted at Virginia University found that 50 percent of women are experiencing early menopause, with more than 4,500 women participating in the study. Of the women aged 30-40 years, 56 percent had already reached menopause or were on the verge of it. Dr. Jennifer Payne, who contributed to the research, highlighted that while hot flashes typically occurred around the age of 45, 62 percent of participants reported experiencing them much earlier. The main causes of early menopause are believed to be stress, poor dietary habits, and obesity.
