New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In Hinduism, the cow is revered as a 'mother' and is worshipped for its divine significance. Feeding a cow is considered an act of virtue, but there are certain foods that should never be offered to a cow, both from a religious and health perspective.

Onion and garlic are among the foods that should be avoided. These are classified as tamasic foods in scriptures, and feeding them to cows can be harmful to their health. Similarly, overly spicy or chili-laden foods should also be avoided as they can disrupt the cow’s digestive system, leading to stomach problems.

Stale or spoiled food is another item to avoid. Feeding cows leftover food can cause health issues, including stomach problems, and is considered sinful in religious texts. Likewise, processed or junk foods should never be fed to cows. These foods can damage their digestive system and overall health.

Additionally, foods high in salt or sugar are harmful to cows. Excessive intake of sugar and salt can adversely affect a cow’s kidneys and overall health. It is best to feed cows fresh, easily digestible homemade food to ensure their well-being.

These guidelines help in maintaining the cow’s health and respect for its revered status in Hinduism.
