New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A lioness attacked and killed a young man in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district on Monday evening. The victim, Mangabhai, was working alone in his field and drawing water when the lioness suddenly pounced on him and dragged him into the nearby bushes. The terrifying incident occurred around 7 p.m. in Kakri Mouli village, where the lioness was roaming with her pride.

Upon hearing the commotion, villagers rushed to the scene and attempted to drive the lioness away by making loud noises. However, the lioness refused to release the body, keeping it tightly locked in her jaws. Lions instinctively guard their prey, making it difficult for the villagers to retrieve the victim. Realizing that conventional methods were not working, they resorted to using a tractor and JCB to free the body from the animal’s grip.

The forest department was alerted, and a team quickly launched a search operation. Within a few hours, officials successfully tranquilized the lioness and transported her to a rescue center. Jayant Patel, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) of Shetrunji Division, stated that immediate action was taken to prevent further danger. He also emphasized the need for residents to take precautions, advising them to avoid stepping out alone after dark, carry protective tools, and refrain from sleeping in open areas.

The incident highlights the growing issue of human-wildlife conflict in Gujarat, where the increasing lion population has led to more frequent encounters with humans. A similar attack occurred last month in Amreli, where villagers, despite being aware of the presence of lions, failed to take necessary safety measures. Following this latest tragedy, the forest department has intensified surveillance in the region to prevent further attacks.
