Eknath Shinde Resigns as Maharashtra CM, To Serve as Caretaker Chief Minister
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): On Tuesday, Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, resigned, clearing the path for the formation of a new government. Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan, who asked him to continue as the caretaker CM until the new government is sworn in. During this transition, Shinde was flanked by Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP and Ajit Pawar of the NCP, signaling unity among the ruling allies in the BJP-led NDA.
The resignation came amidst intense discussions on the appointment of the next Chief Minister. Both Shinde and Fadnavis are seen as strong contenders for the post. Shiv Sena has pointed to the Bihar model of 2020, suggesting that Shinde, being a key Maratha leader who led the alliance to victory, should claim the CM position. On the other hand, the BJP, bolstered by its strong mandate of 132 seats, insists that it should hold the CM post.
The decision on the next CM is critical for maintaining a delicate balance in the coalition. Shinde’s stature as a prominent Maratha leader who led the alliance’s success is contrasted with Fadnavis’s seniority as a Brahmin leader with the backing of the RSS. As discussions continue, the BJP must navigate these dynamics carefully to ensure the smooth functioning of the state government.
