Lucknow (The Uttam Hindu): In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued a new directive that could result in the cancellation of a driver's license if their vehicle receives repeated traffic fines. This announcement came during a meeting of the Road Safety Council, where the CM instructed officials to take strict action against such violations. According to the new rule, the owner’s license will be revoked if their vehicle is repeatedly fined. Additionally, CM Yogi called for enhanced traffic management for the upcoming Prayagraj Maha Kumbh.

CM Yogi highlighted that many fatal accidents occur due to speeding and failure to use seat belts. Similarly, motorcycle riders not wearing helmets and minors driving vehicles also increase the risk of accidents, posing danger to both the drivers and pedestrians.

In response to this, CM Yogi directed that all district road safety committees, led by the District Magistrates, hold their meetings by January 5th. He also ordered that from January 6th to 10th, road safety awareness programs be organized in schools and colleges across the state. For the Maha Kumbh, the CM recommended increasing the number of PRD and Home Guard personnel to ensure better traffic management.

Annual Road Accidents in UP Cause 25,000-30,000 Deaths

According to CM Yogi, approximately 23,000 to 25,000 people lose their lives in road accidents each year in Uttar Pradesh. He stressed that most of these accidents happen due to a lack of awareness. As part of the initiative, the CM emphasized that Road Safety Month should be conducted not just in Lucknow but across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, the Chief Minister proposed monthly road safety meetings at the district level, involving key officials such as the Superintendent of Police, Senior Police Officers, Municipal Commissioner, RTO, Public Works Department, and others.

Instructions for Improving Road Safety

CM Yogi has directed that the progress of road safety initiatives be evaluated every three months at the state level. Areas prone to frequent accidents should be identified, and specific plans should be devised to address the causes of these incidents. Special attention is also required to prevent minors from driving e-rickshaws and other vehicles, and the registration process for e-rickshaws must be streamlined. Additionally, CM Yogi called for the installation of road signs at critical points to facilitate smoother traffic flow. He stressed that overloading of vehicles must be strictly prohibited, especially on highways and expressways. Vehicles found overloaded should be removed with the help of cranes. Awareness campaigns to encourage the use of helmets, seat belts, and adherence to road safety standards must also be conducted.

Promoting Road Safety Awareness

CM Yogi instructed that repeated traffic violations should lead to the cancellation of the driving license or permit, and this action should be linked with the Fastag system. He also directed that road safety hoardings be displayed across all districts, tehsils, police stations, and municipal areas in the state. Furthermore, the CM proposed creating Road Safety Parks in every district, similar to the Road Safety Clubs in schools and colleges. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, Minister of Urban Development AK Sharma, Minister of Transport Dayashankar Singh, Minister of Basic Education Sandeep Singh, and senior officials from various departments.
