New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court has urged the Centre and State governments to draft policies preventing private hospitals from exploiting patients through excessive pricing.

A Bench led by Justice Surya Kant expressed concerns over hospitals forcing patients to buy medicines, implants, and medical devices from their in-house pharmacies at inflated rates. The hearing followed a writ petition by Siddharth Dalmia, who alleged financial exploitation during a relative’s cancer treatment.

While acknowledging the critical role of private hospitals in healthcare, the court warned against overregulation, which could discourage private investment. The petitioners highlighted a widespread practice where hospitals compel patients to purchase supplies exclusively from hospital-run pharmacies, often charging above the Maximum Retail Price (MRP).

The ruling has reignited discussions on pricing transparency and patient rights, with consumer groups demanding stricter oversight. The government is now expected to deliberate on regulatory measures that balance patient protection with the growth of private healthcare.
