Protests Erupt in Bhaderwah Over Controversial Social Media Post, Internet Services Suspended

Jammu(The Uttam Hindu): Protests broke out in Bhaderwah town of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday after a controversial social media post, allegedly shared by a leader of a Hindu group, sparked tensions. In response to the objectionable content, authorities suspended internet services in Doda's Bhaderwah town. The incident also led to protests and a partial bandh in the area, which is known for its communal sensitivity. Bhaderwah’s SP, Vinod Sharma, confirmed that an FIR has been filed against Virender Razdan, the head of Shri Sanatan Dharam Sabha Bhaderwah, and raids are currently underway to apprehend him. Sharma urged the public to maintain peace and uphold communal harmony.
Razdan allegedly posted content that was deemed communally sensitive, causing backlash from both Hindu and Muslim communities. In reaction, Anjuman-e-Islamia Bhaderwah organized a march from the local Jamia Masjid to the Bhaderwah police station, chanting slogans and demanding the arrest of Razdan for insulting religious sentiments. The protestors dispersed after assurances from the SP that the law would take its course against the accused. Meanwhile, in response to Anjuman’s call, shops in the town remained partially closed. Riyaz Ahmed Najar, president of Anjuman-e-Islamia, stated, "The peaceful protest will continue until the culprit is arrested. This isn’t the first time he has made such controversial comments. He is a habitual offender and must face legal action for the sake of peace and brotherhood." SP Vinod Sharma confirmed that a case under Section 299 of the Indian Penal Code (which addresses deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) had been filed against Razdan. Multiple raids are being conducted to arrest him.
Sharma also appealed for calm and emphasized that the law would take its course. "The administration will not tolerate any disturbance," he added. In an effort to prevent further unrest, mobile internet services in Bhaderwah town and surrounding areas were suspended as a precaution. Senior BJP leader and DDC member, Thakur Yudhvir Singh, condemned the post, clarifying that Razdan had shared the objectionable video in his personal capacity and that the Sanatan Dharam Sabha Bhaderwah had no involvement. The Doda Police also issued a statement, urging the public not to share or forward content that could incite communal hatred. The town, which has a nearly equal mix of Hindu and Muslim populations, has witnessed previous attempts by anti-social elements to disturb communal harmony.
