PM Modi Launches Campaign Against Obesity, Introduces New Challenge

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In his latest Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the growing health concern of obesity in India. He described it as a serious issue affecting many individuals across the country but emphasized that it can be managed through small lifestyle changes and proper care. The Prime Minister shared that one in every eight people in India is struggling with obesity. Citing World Health Organization data, he pointed out that over 250 million people worldwide were suffering from obesity in 2022.
PM Modi introduced a simple challenge to combat this issue: he urged people to reduce their oil consumption in cooking by 10%. He suggested that when purchasing cooking oil, individuals should buy 10% less than usual. The Prime Minister encouraged people to take on the challenge and, in turn, challenge others to do the same. He expressed confidence that such small changes could significantly help in controlling obesity.
Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, who has successfully managed his own weight issues, also spoke about his experience. He shared that he was once obese but managed to reduce his weight through a disciplined diet and exercise regimen. He encouraged parents to participate in outdoor games with their children, emphasizing the importance of physical activity. He supported PM Modi’s appeal to cut down oil consumption and urged people to follow the suggestion for better health.
Athlete Nikhat Zareen added her voice, explaining that consuming oily food leaves her feeling exhausted quickly. To maintain her fitness, she follows a strict diet and exercise routine, stressing that staying fit is essential not only for individuals but for the nation’s well-being.
Dr. Devi Shetty, a renowned cardiologist, also addressed the issue, stating that obesity is a growing health concern, especially among India’s youth. He attributed the rise in obesity to poor dietary habits, particularly the excessive intake of carbohydrates such as rice, roti, and sugar, along with excessive oil consumption. Dr. Shetty warned that these habits lead to serious health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, and fatty liver. He advised young people to control their diet and make regular exercise a part of their daily routine to combat obesity and maintain good health.
