No Link Between Sudden Deaths and COVID-19 Vaccine: Minister Nadda's Bold Revelation in Rajya Sabha
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed that COVID-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of sudden unexplained deaths. On the contrary, it has been found to reduce such risks, particularly among young adults. The study focused on individuals aged 18-45, examining the causes of sudden, unexplained deaths in healthy individuals.
Investigation into Cases of Sudden Death
Nadda explained that the study was conducted across 47 major hospitals from October 1, 2021, to March 31, 2023. It included individuals who were previously healthy, had no known illnesses, and experienced sudden deaths. The research analyzed data from 729 cases of sudden deaths and 2,916 individuals in the control group.
Vaccination Reduces Mortality Risk
The Health Minister revealed that the study found a significant reduction in the risk of sudden unexplained deaths among those who received the COVID-19 vaccine. The risk reduction was particularly notable among individuals who had received two doses of the vaccine. In contrast, factors such as hospitalization due to COVID-19, a family history of sudden deaths, excessive alcohol consumption, drug abuse, and strenuous physical activity were associated with an increased risk of sudden deaths.
Impact of Lifestyle and COVID-19 History
The study also highlighted that prior COVID-19 infections, a history of hospitalizations, and certain lifestyle factors like alcohol intake, drug use, and excessive physical exertion contributed to a heightened risk of sudden deaths.
AEFI Monitoring and Reporting System
Nadda informed the Rajya Sabha about a robust Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI) monitoring system established for COVID-19 vaccination. The SAFEVAC platform, a web-based application, ensures transparent and streamlined reporting of adverse events. Additionally, FAQs related to COVID-19 vaccine side effects are available on the Health Ministry’s website.
Medical Intervention and Public Awareness
The government has implemented measures to ensure timely medical assistance for affected individuals. Post-vaccination, recipients are observed for 30 minutes at the vaccination site, where anaphylaxis kits are readily available. Moreover, AEFI management centers provide free treatment for any adverse reactions.
