Malda Violence: 34 Arrested, Internet Services Remain Suspended

West Bengal (The Uttam Hindu) : A wave of violence and unrest swept through Malda district in West Bengal, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. The violence, which erupted on Wednesday evening, resulted in the destruction of several shops, vehicles and homes, with rioters also looting and vandalizing properties. According to eyewitnesses, the violence began when a group of protesters gathered in the town's central square, demanding action against a local politician. However, the protest quickly turned violent, with rioters setting fire to shops and vehicles, and clashing with police.
The police, who were initially caught off guard, struggled to restore order, with reports of stone-pelting and clashes between rioters and security personnel. The situation was brought under control only after reinforcements were called in and a curfew was imposed. In the aftermath of the violence, the district administration suspended internet services in the area, citing concerns that social media platforms could be used to spread inflammatory content and incite further violence.
The West Bengal government has faced criticism for its handling of the situation, with opposition parties accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of failing to take adequate measures to prevent the violence. The Calcutta High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and has sought a report from the state government on the violence and the steps taken to restore order. The violence has left many residents of Malda shaken, with several families forced to flee their homes to escape the violence. The district administration has set up relief camps to provide shelter and assistance to those affected.
