Kerala MLA Uma thomas's health improves, sends new year wishes
Kochi: Congress legislator Uma Thomas, who has been under medical care after a fall at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, is showing signs of improvement, according to the medical team attending her. On Wednesday, the third day of her hospitalization, Dr. Krishnanunni Polakulathhe, the head of the medical team, confirmed her condition had stabilized and that she had even wished her son a "Happy New Year." "Overall, she is improving, and her lung X-ray shows good progress. The challenge now is determining when she can be weaned off the ventilator, but we cannot rush it. She reports pain, and we are doing our best to manage it," said Dr. Polakulathhe. He also noted that Uma had started moving her arms and legs, though she had no recollection of the incident that led to her hospitalization.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening when Uma tripped over a barricade near the VIP pavilion while attending a Guinness World Record attempt for a mass dance at the stadium. She fell and hit her head on the concrete floor, though the surrounding area had grass. The incident has sparked an investigation into the event’s organization.
Minister Saji Cherian, who witnessed the fall, shared his shock. "I saw her fall after we exchanged pleasantries. It happened in an instant. The loud music from the dance event drowned out the cries for help, but once she fell, she was immediately attended to and taken to the hospital," said Cherian, who later visited her at the hospital and expressed deep distress over the incident.
Uma Thomas, the widow of Congress veteran P.T. Thomas, represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency. She entered politics after her husband’s death in December 2021, and won a bypoll with a significant margin. Known for her calm demeanor and thoughtful speeches, Uma holds a vital role as the only woman Congress legislator in the current Assembly, a position that is both significant and symbolic for her party.
