New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): As the US under the Trump 2.0 administration begins deporting illegal Indian immigrants the Indian government is progressing with plans to introduce the Overseas Mobility (Facilitation and Welfare) Bill 2024. This proposed law aims to establish a structured and legal pathway for Indians seeking employment opportunities abroad, ensuring safe and organized migration.

The bill is set to replace the outdated Emigration Act of 1983, addressing the shifting landscape of global migration. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) explained that the new law is designed to enhance the safety and efficiency of overseas job migration. Currently, the draft is under review by various ministries, and after internal discussions, it will be open for public feedback for 15 to 30 days before being finalized.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, has continually emphasized the need to update migration laws to reflect the changing global context. Replacing the old emigration rules with a modern framework is viewed as a crucial step in ensuring better protection and welfare for Indian citizens seeking employment abroad.
