Govt Aims to Position India as a Global Maritime Leader: Sonowal

New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday stated that the government is committed to positioning India as a global maritime leader. He emphasized that the ocean is not only vital for trade but also for fostering opportunities, growth, and national progress.
While speaking at the National Maritime Day celebrations in New Delhi, Sonowal highlighted the significant transformation happening in India's maritime sector. "With our vast Blue Economy, state-of-the-art port infrastructure, and a future-ready shipping ecosystem, India's maritime sector is becoming a key driver of our progress toward a 'Viksit Bharat'," he said.
Sonowal also described National Maritime Day as a celebration of the nation’s seafarers, coastal communities, and the country’s enduring commitment to building a sustainable, secure, and globally competitive maritime future. This year's theme, "Prosperous Seas – Developed India and Youth for Blue Economy and Green Growth," underscores the importance of sustainable growth within the maritime sector and the crucial role of youth in fostering innovation and environmental responsibility.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways commemorated the 62nd National Maritime Day across India, celebrating the country's rich maritime heritage and the remarkable contributions of seafarers to the nation’s growth and global connectivity.
The central celebration, organized by the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee (NMDCC) Delhi chapter, was held at the Vinay Marg Sports Ground in the national capital under the Directorate General of Shipping. During the event, Sonowal engaged with cadets, learning about their aspirations and training, and met with female cadets, encouraging them to take leadership roles in shaping India's maritime future.
Sonowal expressed: "Interacting with young cadets during National Maritime Week was truly inspiring. Their passion and dedication reflect the bright future of India's maritime sector. I commended them for their vital role in building the nation through a strong, modern, and efficient maritime industry." The Ministry also honored outstanding individuals and organizations in the maritime sector, recognizing their exceptional contributions with awards and commendations.
The 62nd National Maritime Day celebration not only paid tribute to the legacy of India’s maritime pioneers but also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a greener, more inclusive, and innovation-driven maritime future. The day marks the historic voyage of the 'S.S. Loyalty,' the first Indian-owned steamship, which sailed from Mumbai to London on April 5, 1919, marking India’s entry into international shipping and laying the foundation for the nation's maritime journey.
