New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : The Supreme Court of India has expressed concern over the diminishing concept of family unity in the country, highlighting a shift towards individualism that threatens traditional familial bonds. A bench comprising Justices Pankaj Mithal and SVN Bhatti observed that India, traditionally guided by the philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (the world is one family), is now facing challenges in maintaining unity even within immediate families. They noted, "The very concept of 'family' is being eroded and we are on the brink of one person, one family."

This observation was made during the adjudication of a property dispute between a man and his parents, who sought his eviction from their house. The court's remarks underscore the increasing prevalence of familial disputes over property and maintenance, reflecting a broader societal trend towards fragmentation of family structures. The justices emphasized the need to uphold traditional family values and unity, cautioning against the rise of a "one person, one family" culture that could undermine the social fabric of the nation. They highlighted that while India has historically embraced the concept of global unity, there is now a struggle to maintain cohesion even among close relatives. This development has sparked discussions on the evolving nature of family dynamics in India and the importance of preserving familial bonds amidst rapid societal changes.
