Bhandara (The Uttam Hindu): A catastrophic explosion rocked the Ordnance Factory in Bhandara, near Nagpur on January 24, 2025 leading to the death of at least one worker and several others trapped under debris. The explosion occurred around 10:30 AM in the Jawahar Nagar area of the factory and was so powerful that it was heard from 5 kilometers away.

Avinash Meshram, a 52-year-old employee involved in detonating explosives was identified as the deceased. Emergency responders, including rescue teams, firefighters, and medical staff were quickly dispatched to the site for rescue operations. The blast caused significant structural damage, including the collapse of the factory roof. At least 12 people were present at the site and two individuals have been rescued so far. Ongoing efforts are being made to locate and assist any remaining survivors.

District Collector Sanjay Kolte confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the explosion and a three-member committee has been formed to examine the circumstances. The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination and local authorities are providing support to Meshram's family, including compensation. The incident has drawn political criticism with Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole holding the central government responsible for safety lapses at the facility. Authorities are continuing their efforts to rescue survivors and further updates on casualties and the ongoing operations are expected.
