Lucknow (The Uttam Hindu): A Lucknow court has imposed a fine of ₹200 on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on Veer Savarkar. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's court issued the penalty due to his repeated absence from hearings. The court has directed Rahul Gandhi to appear on April 14, 2025, warning that failure to do so may result in strict legal action. The case pertains to Rahul Gandhi’s controversial statement about Veer Savarkar, for which the hearing is ongoing.

The court had previously ordered him to be present, but he failed to appear. During the hearing, his lawyer, Pranshu Agrawal, represented him and filed an application for exemption from personal appearance. He stated that Rahul Gandhi, as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had an important meeting in Delhi and other engagements, which prevented him from attending the court hearing. The lawyer emphasized that Rahul Gandhi respects the court’s orders and is not deliberately avoiding the hearings.

The controversy stems from a press conference in Akola, where Rahul Gandhi allegedly made remarks calling Veer Savarkar a ‘servant of the British’ and a ‘pension receiver’. In response, Nripendra Pandey filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow Bench, seeking legal action against Rahul Gandhi under Sections 153(A) and 505 of the Indian Penal Code for promoting enmity and spreading misinformation.
