Bengaluru (The Uttam Hindu): In a groundbreaking achievement, 27-year-old K N Renuka Pujar has become the first transgender individual to be appointed as a guest lecturer at Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Karnataka. Her appointment is being celebrated as a milestone for inclusivity in the state’s academic community.

Pujar, who holds a postgraduate degree in Kannada, began her role in the Kannada Department at the university's Nandihalli campus (PG Centre) earlier this month. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude for the support she received from her family and university faculty.

"I'm very happy. After a lot of struggle, I have reached this stage. The university has supported me immensely," she said. Pujar shared her journey, stating that she graduated in 2018, embraced her identity as a transgender individual in 2017 during her second year of studies, and completed her MA in 2022.

Family's unwavering support

A native of Kurugodu in Ballari district, Pujar credited her parents for their encouragement and support. "My family comes from an agricultural background, and my parents ensured I received an education to succeed in life," she shared.

She also acknowledged the role of her university faculty in her success. “The faculty supported me wholeheartedly during my MA studies,” she added.

Aspiring to inspire others

Pujar’s ambition is to pursue a PhD and become a professor, with a mission to encourage other transgender individuals to pursue higher education. “I love teaching and want transgenders to pursue education and reach new heights,” she said.

Her appointment follows a competitive selection process in which Pujar stood out among 30 applicants due to her exceptional qualifications, academic record, and strong demonstration during her lecture.

A symbol of perseverance

University officials praised Pujar’s determination and achievements, describing her as a symbol of resilience and inspiration. Her success is being hailed as a significant step toward inclusivity and empowerment for the transgender community, encouraging others to overcome barriers and strive for academic and professional excellence.
