Mumbai(The Uttam Hindu): A gas leak and subsequent explosion at a fertilizer plant in Maharashtra's Sangli district killed three people, including two women, and left nine more hospitalised on Thursday evening. The incident occurred at Myanmar Chemical Company, located in Shalgaon MIDC, Kadegaon tehsil, around 6:30 pm.

According to police reports, the reactor at the facility exploded, and this caused chemical fumes, said to be ammonia, which were released. As a result, twelve people were affected and were taken to nearby medical facilities. Two female workers and a security guard died from their exposure, and nine are currently under treatment. Suchita Uthale, 50 years old from Yetgaon, and Neelam Rethrekar, 26 years old from Masur, who died in the attack. " Seven people have been admitted to Sahyadri Hospital in Karad - and five of them are in intensive care, where they are being treated for severe injuries". Ammonia is the suspected gas involved in the incidence, confirmed Superintendent of Police Sandip Ghuge. Police authorities have been able to initiate an investigation into the cause of the explosion and leak.
