New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced some significant rule changes for players and teams. The most notable change is the removal of the captain’s ban for slow over-rate offenses. Instead, BCCI has decided to implement a demerit point system similar to international cricket.

However, this demerit point system will not be limited to slow over-rates alone; it has been incorporated into the entire Code of Conduct. Under this system, players and coaching staff will also receive demerit points for rule violations, which could lead to suspensions of up to five matches.

Before the IPL 2025 season kicks off on March 22, BCCI officials held a meeting in Mumbai with the captains of all 10 franchises. During the meeting, captains were briefed about these crucial changes to the Code of Conduct. These new rules will be implemented from this season and will be part of the playing conditions.

Until now, players in the IPL were fined by the match referee for any form of misconduct or inappropriate behavior. However, under the new system, players will receive demerit points along with fines, which could eventually lead to suspensions.

According to a Cricbuzz report, any player or team violating the Code of Conduct will now receive demerit points, just like in international cricket. These demerit points will remain on the player's or team’s record for a full 36 months (three years) and will determine the severity of penalties.

As per the new rules, if a player is found guilty of a Level-1 offense, they will face a 25% match fee fine and receive one demerit point. For a Level-2 offense, the player will get 3 to 4 demerit points. A Level-3 offense will result in 5 to 6 demerit points, while a Level-4 violation will attract 7 to 8 demerit points.

Now, let's look at the punishments based on demerit points. According to Article 7.6 of the Code of Conduct:

- If a player accumulates 4 to 7 demerit points, they will be suspended for one match.

- 8 to 11 demerit points will lead to a two-match suspension.

- If a player earns 12 to 15 demerit points within three years, they could be banned for three matches.

- If a player's demerit points reach 16 or more, they could face a maximum suspension of five matches.
