'CM Sukh-Ashray Yojana' in Himachal to provide support for abandoned and surrendered children

Shimla (The Uttam Hindu): The Himachal Pradesh government has announced an expansion of its existing **Mukhyamantri Sukhashrya Yojana** to include abandoned and surrendered children. The move aims to provide comprehensive support to a larger group of vulnerable children in the state. Chief Minister **Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu** made the announcement on Sunday, explaining that the scheme will now benefit not only the 6,000 orphaned children currently supported but also abandoned and surrendered children. These children will be provided with various forms of assistance to help improve their lives.

"An abandoned child is one who has been deserted by their biological or adoptive parents, while a surrendered child refers to those given up by their parents or guardians due to uncontrollable circumstances," CM Sukhu explained. Under the expanded scheme, eligible children will receive certificates issued by the **District Child Welfare Committees**. Once cleared, they will be entitled to a range of benefits, including:

- Monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 until the age of 14, and Rs 2,500 until the age of 18.

- Pocket money of Rs 4,000 per month until the age of 27.

- Full coverage for higher education costs up to the age of 27, including Rs 3,000 per month for postgraduate students without hostel facilities.

In addition to education support, the scheme will provide financial help to ensure the children’s livelihood:

- Rs 2 lakh for start-up ventures to help them establish businesses.

- Rs 2 lakh for marriage assistance.

- Rs 3 lakh for land and housing support , enabling them to build their own homes.

This initiative is part of the state's broader effort to safeguard and empower orphaned and abandoned children, with **Himachal Pradesh** becoming the first state in India to enact legislation ensuring their comprehensive care and support. To provide these children with a wider perspective, the government will also fund an **annual air travel experience**, including stays in **three-star hotels**. This program is designed to offer children exposure to new opportunities, enhance their confidence, and broaden their horizons.

“The state government is committed to ensuring that these children have access to all necessary resources for a dignified and fulfilling life. This scheme will take care of their education, welfare, and overall well-being, helping them to live their lives to the fullest,” CM Sukhu added. The Himachal government is taking full responsibility for the welfare, education, and care of these children under the **Mukhyamantri Sukhashrya Yojana**, ensuring they have every opportunity to thrive.
