Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alleging that the film "Emergency" set to release on Friday, portrays Sikhs in a negative light. In a letter dated January 16, 2025 Dhami urged the Punjab government to ban the film, claiming it spreads propaganda against Sikhs and should not be allowed to screen in the state.

The SGPC President stated that if the film is released in Punjab, it will face protests. In his letter, he emphasized that the film produced by BJP-affiliated Kangana Ranaut is scheduled for release on January 17, 2025 in cinemas across Punjab with tickets already being booked. Dhami expressed concerns over the portrayal of Sikhs in the film, particularly events surrounding the 1984 attacks on sacred Sikh sites such as Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Akal Takht Sahib and other religious landmarks. He alleged that the film depicts the Sikh genocide and other incidents with a bias, pushing an anti-Sikh agenda.

SGPC had previously voiced its opposition to the film by writing to the Chief Secretary of Punjab. Through a formal resolution it urged the state government to halt the release of the movie in Punjab. However, according to Dhami no action has been taken by the government so far. Dhami warned that releasing the film could lead to widespread anger and resentment among the Sikh community. He also criticized the film for its alleged misrepresentation of historical figures, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and for promoting divisive narratives. The SGPC has called on the Punjab government to address these concerns promptly to prevent further unrest.
