Elton John Struggles with Vision Loss, Unable to Watch TV or Attend Sons' Sports Events
Los Angeles(The Uttam Hindu): Even the legendary Elton John faces limitations, despite his iconic status. The 78-year-old musician recently opened up about the challenges he's been facing due to a severe eye infection that has left him unable to read, watch television, or watch his sons play sports. Elton, who shares sons Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, with his husband David Furnish, contracted a severe eye infection last July. This condition left him blind in his right eye and with "limited vision" in his left. The musician spoke candidly about how this has affected his daily life in an interview with The Times. “I can see you, but I can't see TV, I can't read, and I can’t watch my boys play rugby and soccer. It has been very stressful because I’m used to soaking all of that up. It’s distressing. You get emotional, but I have to remind myself that I’m lucky to have the life I do. I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see a little out of my left eye, so I tell myself to just get on with it,” he shared.
Elton, who remains optimistic despite the difficulties, had previously spoken to The Guardian about his situation. "I’m an optimist at heart. I’ve got bad eyesight at the moment. There are days I’ve been miserable, but then I remind myself how lucky I am. I’ve gained a newfound respect for people with sight impairments. I’ve overcome addiction and health challenges before, and I believe I can get through this too," he said. Elton also reflected on his past struggles with addiction and offered advice to his younger self. In an interview with Smooth Radio's Kate Garraway, he remarked, "If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be to never take drugs. I did, and it took me down a dark path. But recovering from that journey helped me become the person I am now. Music has always been a constant in my life—through the highs and the lows. It nearly destroyed me, but it also saved me." Despite his vision loss, Elton remains focused on staying positive and appreciating the life he has, especially his music, which has been a source of strength throughout his career.
