Anubhav Bassi's Lucknow show canceled after warning over 'foul language

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Lucknow shows of stand-up comedian Anubhav Singh Bassi, scheduled for 3 pm and 7 pm, were cancelled by the police due to concerns over law and order. The cancellation followed a letter from Uttar Pradesh State Women's Commission vice-chairperson, Aparna Yadav, to Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, urging that the shows be halted to prevent any disrespect towards women.
In her letter, dated February 14, Yadav expressed concern about the use of inappropriate language in Bassi's previous performances. She highlighted that after viewing his shows on YouTube, it was noted that indecent words were used and she emphasized the need to maintain respect for women in public events. She wrote, "It has been known that on February 15, a comedy show of Anubhav Singh Bassi is being organised at the Indira Gandhi Pratisthan, Lucknow. After watching his previous shows on YouTube channel, it has been noted that indecent words (apshabd) are used during his shows. Hence, it is expected of you that you (DGP) please ensure that this proposed programme and in similar programmes of stand-up artists, neither any indecent words nor any undignified comments are made on women. If possible, then such shows should be cancelled and not permitted in the future."
The police, taking into account the concerns raised, decided to cancel the shows to prevent any potential disturbances. The incident adds to the ongoing debate over the boundaries of comedy and the responsibility of public figures to uphold decorum at events.
