New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has announced the imminent return of 10,000 Bus Marshals and Civil Defence Volunteers (CVDs) in the fight against pollution, following a high-level meeting she chaired. This decision comes after a prolonged battle with the central government for their reinstatement, which marks a significant victory for the Delhi government. These marshals will play a vital role in pollution checks, border inspections, and awareness campaigns, reinforcing the government's commitment to environmental protection under the leadership of CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Atishi emphasized the importance of the Bus Marshals, originally deployed to ensure women's safety on public transport, highlighting their previous removal by the central government in April 2023. With their reinstatement, the marshals will be tasked with overseeing approximately 1,000 pollution inspection centers and monitoring compliance with vehicle emissions standards at Delhi's borders. Additionally, they will address pollution hotspots and assist the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in managing waste issues, including illegal dumping and dust prevention at construction sites.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai underscored the vital role of CVDs in past initiatives, such as the "Odd-Even scheme" and the "Red Light On, Gaadi Off" campaign. He expressed confidence that their return would enhance public awareness and enforcement efforts against pollution. As Delhi faces rising pollution levels from stubble burning, fireworks, and increased traffic, the government is launching the "Diye Jalao, Patake Nahi" campaign to promote responsible behavior during the festive season, reinforcing a united front in the battle against pollution.
