Scitron Program at Punjab University: Star Night and Student Performances Amid Security and Protests

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The second day of the Scitron program, organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Punjab University, saw a vibrant display of student talent at the Student Center. Female students showcased their performances to Haryanvi, Punjabi, and Himachali songs, while others engaged the audience with Shayari and poetry. Boys participated in pushup competitions, and the open mic event allowed students to display their musical talents, leaving the audience mesmerized by their singing.
The evening’s highlight was the Star Night featuring Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma, held at the South Campus. Preparations for the much-anticipated event began at 11 am, with ABVP securing the necessary NOC in the afternoon. By 6 pm, thousands of students gathered to enjoy the performance. Following the event, the Department of Student Welfare (DSW) recommended using the Sector-25 ground for future Star Night events.
However, the event was marred by a security lapse. During the concert, a violent altercation broke out, with two to three youths attacking another student with a knife. The victim was seriously injured and was rushed to PGI for treatment. Local police are investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, the NSUI, which had been on a hunger strike for the past four days in protest against the cancellation of Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan's Star Night, ended their strike on a positive note. NSUI Vice President Archit Garg and his colleagues ended their protest by drinking juice after a meeting with Punjab University officials. During the meeting, the officials acknowledged their mistake and promised to distribute funds equally among all members of the student council. Additionally, they agreed to open a student council account for transparency and to form a committee overseeing fund distribution.
Furthermore, the administration assured the NSUI that Rs 7.5 lakh, which was spent on Garg’s cancelled Star Night, would be reimbursed. This development follows a meeting between NSUI president Anurag Dalal and DSW officials on Friday, where the irregularities in the student council’s fund management were discussed.
