Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant development, the Economic Offences Wing convicted suspended UT Police DSP RC Meena and KLG Hotel Group owner Aman Grover in a Rs 40 lakh bribery case that was registered by the CBI 10 years ago. Both the accused were present in court during the hearing, and upon conviction, they were immediately taken into police custody.

The CBI special court will pronounce the sentencing today for Meena and Grover. The case stemmed from a fraud complaint lodged by Deepa Duggal, the mother-in-law of Aman Grover, against the Chawla family over a bungalow transaction in December 2014. Grover, in connection with his friend Sanjay Dahuja, allegedly used his ties with DSP Meena to demand a bribe of Rs 5 crore from Guneet Kaur to avoid her family’s arrest. The bribe was later reduced to Rs 70 lakh, prompting a complaint to the CBI.

In August 2015, the CBI arrested Surinder Kumar, SI of the Economic Cell, and Sanjay Dahuja while they were accepting the bribe. Further investigations led to the arrest of Grover and Meena. One of the accused, Surinder Kumar, died in an accident, while Dahuja became a government witness.

The CBI presented a detailed 2,000-page charge sheet against the accused, revealing a bribe amount of Rs 40 lakh from Grover and a post-dated cheque of Rs 30 lakh, which was pivotal evidence. During the hearing, both Meena and Grover maintained their composure, with Grover's wife visibly distressed upon hearing the verdict. Meena reassured his family, stating, "Don't panic, this court is nothing," before being taken to Burail jail.
