New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Chandigarh is set to introduce a hike in parking charges across the city, with new policies soon to be implemented by the Municipal Corporation. While the first 15 minutes of parking will remain free for private vehicles, the new charges will see an increase of about 40% for parking beyond this grace period.

Currently, the Municipal Corporation manages 87 parking lots, where the minimum fee for two-wheelers is Rs 7, and for four-wheelers, it is Rs 14. For monthly passes, private four-wheelers will pay Rs 355 for underground parking and Rs 475 for open parking. Commercial parking will cost Rs 945. Vehicles can park for a maximum of 12 hours at these lots.

With the new policy, the parking charges will rise as follows: For a two-wheeler, the rate for four hours will increase to Rs 10, and for a four-wheeler, it will rise to Rs 20. A private car's parking fee will also go up to Rs 20. In addition, the rates will continue to increase annually.

While the agenda was presented in the Municipal Corporation House, it was not discussed. However, the new parking policy is expected to be implemented within three months.

The Municipal Corporation currently earns about Rs 1.05 crore in monthly revenue from parking, with a profit of approximately Rs 35 lakh after accounting for expenses. Following the rate increase, the monthly profit is expected to rise to Rs 1 crore.
