Chandigarh grapples with air pollution crisis, health department issues urgent advisory
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Public Relations Department of Chandigarh Administration has issued a special health advisory for citizens to avoid air pollution. In view of the rising pollution level, the administration has advised people to take special precautions so that they can avoid exposure to polluted air. The administration has suggested that people avoid walking, running or any physical activity in the morning and late evening, especially on days with poor Air Quality Index (AQI). Citizens have been advised to ventilate the houses between 12 noon and 4 pm and keep the windows and doors closed at other times.
The administration has also appealed to avoid burning wood, coal, cow dung and kerosene, and use clean fuel like gas or electricity. People have been asked to avoid burning fireplaces in closed rooms during winter, which increases the risk of CO2 and CO. Apart from this, people have been advised to reduce the use of products like room fresheners, mosquito coils and incense sticks, which further deteriorate the air quality. The administration has also advised people to eat more antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, drink water regularly and wash the eyes with clean water. People who already have lung or heart problems have been instructed to take special precautions and consult a doctor. The administration has also suggested wearing N-95 or N-99 masks on days of severe air pollution.
Chandigarh's deteriorating air quality has become a major health risk for residents. In response, authorities have issued several precautionary guidelines to mitigate the health crisis:
1. **Restricted Outdoor Activities**: Residents are strongly advised against jogging or exercising during the morning and evening hours when pollution levels are at their highest.
2. **Mask Mandate**: The health department recommends wearing masks when stepping outside to minimize exposure to the polluted air.
3. **Window Safety Measures**: To reduce indoor air contamination, citizens are advised to keep windows and doors closed before noon and after 4 pm.
4. **Avoid Burning Fuel**: The public is urged to refrain from burning wood, coal, kerosene, and other fuels that contribute to the city's air pollution.
5. **Precautions for Vulnerable Groups**: People with pre-existing heart or lung conditions are advised to take extra care and protect their health during this period.
6. **Discouraging Smoking**: Authorities recommend avoiding smoking, including cigarettes and bidis, due to their harmful effects and contribution to indoor pollution.
7. **Improving Indoor Air Quality**: Residents are cautioned against using room fresheners, mosquito coils, and incense sticks, as they can worsen indoor air quality.
8. **Eye Care Recommendations**: The advisory suggests frequently rinsing eyes with clean water and seeking medical attention if irritation or discomfort occurs.
To further curb pollution, the administration has imposed a ban on the use of diesel generator sets.
