New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced a major regulatory change, requiring telecom companies to offer separate recharge plans for voice calls and messages, independent of internet data packages. This change was formalized under the Telecom Consumer Protection (12th Amendment) Regulation 2024, issued on December 23, 2024.

The goal of this amendment is to provide consumers with more flexibility and choice in their telecom services, particularly benefitting those who primarily use their phones for voice calls and text messages, without the need for data services. The regulation comes in response to feedback from a consumer survey conducted by TRAI, which highlighted the demand for distinct plans for voice and SMS services. Under the new rules, consumers will be able to select plans tailored to their specific needs, particularly benefiting groups such as the elderly and those living in rural areas, where internet access may be limited or unnecessary. These changes are set to take effect 30 days after their publication in the Official Gazette, signaling a significant shift in the structure of telecom services in India.

Additionally, TRAI has proposed extending the validity period for special tariff vouchers (STVs) from 90 days to up to 365 days, aligning them with data-only vouchers. This change aims to reduce the frequency of recharges for consumers. The authority has also decided to lift restrictions on voucher denominations, giving telecom providers more flexibility in offering a variety of recharge options. These amendments are part of TRAI's ongoing efforts to enhance consumer protection and ensure the telecom market remains responsive to the needs of its users.
