Tokyo (The Uttam Hindu): Former Suzuki Motor Corporation chairman Osamu Suzuki passed away on December 25 at the age of 94 due to lymphoma, the company announced. His death marks the end of an era in the automobile industry, with tributes pouring in for the visionary leader who shaped Suzuki into a global automotive giant. Born on January 30, 1930, in Gero, Gifu Province, Japan, Osamu Suzuki came from a humble background as the fourth son of a farmer. Initially aspiring for a career in politics, his life took a transformative turn after marrying into the Suzuki family. He dedicated his career to Suzuki Motor Corporation, leading the company for over 40 years until his retirement in 2021.
Pioneer of Affordable Cars in India
In the 1980s, when India lacked affordable and reliable cars, Osamu Suzuki recognized the opportunity to create an accessible vehicle for the Indian middle class. Partnering with the Indian government, he spearheaded the launch of the Maruti 800 in 1983, priced at approximately ₹47,500. The car quickly became a household name, earning the title of "the people's car."
