Apple expands its footprint in India with new R&D subsidiary
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Apple Inc. has officially launched a wholly-owned subsidiary in India, named *Apple Operations India*, focusing on research, design, and product development. will engage in hardware development, failure analysis, and procurement of engineering equipment. In a filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) last week, Apple confirmed its commitment to the subsidiary, with a "letter of comfort" providing operational and financial support for its activities in India for the foreseeable future. This move marks a significant milestone for Apple, as it will be the first time the tech giant has set up an R&D operation in India. Until now, Apple’s research and development centers were located in the United States, China, Germany, and Israel. The new facility in India will enhance Apple’s presence in the country, extending beyond its existing operations in assembly and sales.
This strategic expansion comes as Apple experiences robust growth in the Indian market, recently reporting record-breaking revenues. Last week, *Business Standard* reported that Apple plans to open four new retail stores in India, responding to strong demand for its latest iPhone and iPad models. The company recently posted a quarterly revenue of $94.9 billion, a 6% year-on-year increase. The newly established R&D subsidiary will be directly managed by Apple's US parent company, distinguishing it from the existing *Apple India*, which is part of the company's European operations and owned by Apple Operations International, based in Ireland. As part of its broader expansion strategy in India, Apple is also planning new stores in cities like Pune, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai, complementing its current locations in New Delhi and Mumbai’s BKC.
