Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant action, the electricity department raided the residence of Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, following suspicions of tampering with electricity meters. The operation was led by ASP Shrishchandra, supported by the police force and the Rapid Response Force (RRF).

What Prompted the Investigation?

There are two electricity connections at the MP’s house each of four kilowatts. However, in the past yea, the total electricity bill for both connections was just ₹14,000—an amount far below expected consumption levels. Initial investigations revealed that both meters were intermittently switched off for extended periods with one inactive for five months and the other for seven months. This resulted in zero readings being recorded.

Smart Meter Findings

To address these discrepancies the electricity department replaced the old meters with smart meters and sent the old devices for lab testing. Preliminary findings from the smart meter investigation showed:

One meter recorded zero load.

The other registered a load of 5.9 kW.

Description of Home Equipment and Solar Power Usage

MP Ziaur Rahman Barq’s advocate, Qasim Jalal, stated that the residence is equipped with a 10 kW solar panel and a 5 kW generator. The house also has two air conditioners, a refrigerator, lights, and multiple fans. Despite the equipment, the household reportedly paid only the minimum fixed charges for electricity connections as per the rules.

Team Action and Further Steps

The electricity department’s team along with SDM Dr. Vandana Mishra conducted a thorough one-hour investigation checking all appliances connections and equipment. The old meters have been sent for testing to ascertain whether tampering occurred. The department will decide the next course of action based on the investigation report.

Mounting Pressure on the MP

Officials believe that, based on the equipment in use and estimated consumption, a monthly electricity bill of at least ₹6,000 should have been recorded. The stark difference has raised questions tightening scrutiny on MP Ziaur Rahman Barq and his family. If tampering is confirmed, strict action will be taken under the Electricity Act.

Clarifications from the MP’s Side

The MP and his advocate have denied allegations of wrongdoing attributing the low bills to solar power generation and backup from the generator. They assured cooperation with the investigation emphasizing that the truth will emerge once the smart meter readings are analyzed.

The investigation continues and authorities are determined to uncover whether the discrepancies were due to technical faults or deliberate tampering.
