New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Since taking office President Donald Trump has consistently made headlines with his new policies and decisions. On Friday, he announced a significant move that will affect the legal status of hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the United States. Trump revealed that he would be canceling the legal protections granted to Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, potentially forcing around 530,000 people to leave the country within a month.

This decision is part of Trump's ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration. Immigrants from these four countries arrived in the US in October 2022 under a financial sponsor program, receiving a two-year permit to live and work in the country. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that these individuals would lose their legal status 30 days after the notice is published in the Federal Register on April 24. This marks the end of the temporary protections that were granted during former President Joe Biden's tenure.

The humanitarian parole system, which has been in place for many years, allowed people from countries experiencing war or political instability to enter the US and stay temporarily. Under this system, citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela were allowed entry by air with an American sponsor. Now, the Trump administration has decided to put an end to this provision with DHS stating that people on parole without a valid basis to stay in the US must leave before their parole expires.

Trump’s decision to revoke the legal status of these 530,000 immigrants is expected to have significant consequences including possible deportations for many. The move underscores the Trump administration’s continued efforts to tighten immigration policies and restrict the entry and stay of individuals seeking refuge in the United States.
