Trump’s Citizenship Policy Sparks C-Section Rush Among Indian Couples in US
U.S (The Uttam Hindu): With the looming end of birthright citizenship in the United States due to President Donald Trump's new immigration policy many Indian couples in the US are rushing to deliver their babies early. This policy change which denies automatic citizenship to children born in the US to non-permanent residents has created a sense of urgency among immigrant families.
Doctors in states like New Jersey and Texas have reported a surge in requests for preterm cesarean deliveries even from women who are as early as seven months pregnant. Dr. S.D. Rama from New Jersey and Dr. S.G. Mukkala in Texas revealed that while they have counseled couples about the risks of preterm births many parents remain determined to secure US citizenship for their children before the February 20 deadline.
The drive behind this rush is the long waiting period for green cards especially for Indian immigrants which can take decades. Birthright citizenship has historically provided a path for children born in the US to secure citizenship and eventually help their parents obtain residency. However, medical professionals have issued warnings about the severe health risks associated with premature births including complications for the baby and mother. Despite these risks, the urgency to secure a stable future for their children has led many to take this drastic step.
This policy change and its ripple effects have sparked debates over the impact of immigration laws on vulnerable populations, highlighting the lengths to which families will go to secure opportunities for their children.
