Tihar Jail to Parliament: Engineer Rashid Granted Permission By Delhi HC to Attend Session

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant development, the Delhi High Court has granted permission to Abdul Rashid Sheikh, also known as Engineer Rashid, to attend the ongoing Parliament session. Engineer Rashid, a Member of Parliament from the Baramulla constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, has been lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail since 2019 in connection with a terror funding case. As per the court's order, Engineer Rashid will be escorted by police to Parliament on all days between March 26 and April 4 and will be brought back to jail after each session. However, he will not be allowed to use his cellphone or landline or interact with the media while he is out of jail.
The court's decision came after Engineer Rashid's counsel, Senior Advocate N Hariharan, requested permission for his client to attend the Parliament session. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had opposed the plea, citing serious allegations against Engineer Rashid. Engineer Rashid's case has been ongoing since 2017, when he was arrested by the NIA for his alleged involvement in a terror funding case. He has been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and has several cases registered against him.
