South Korea’s President Arrested While Martial Law and Impeachment Crisis Unfold
Seoul (The Uttam Hindu): South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested amid political turmoil. Yoon, who was facing impeachment had martial law declared on December 3, which led to widespread controversy and unrest in the country. Authorities took action against him in connection with the martial law declaration.
On the morning of his arrest, over 3,000 police officers and anti-corruption investigators surrounded Yoon’s residence, where clashes erupted between his supporters and security forces. Several individuals were detained during the confrontation. The political situation escalated when, on December 14 South Korean lawmakers voted to impeach Yoon and the Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on whether to permanently remove him from office.
The prospect of Yoon's arrest had been looming for some time and his lawyers had previously argued that any attempt to detain him was illegal. The arrest of a sitting president has sparked significant global attention marking a major political event in South Korea’s history.
